RESULTS From The Esco BMX Park SUMMER SLAM

Great turn out for the Escondido Summer Slam! I want to thank everyone for showing up and making this a great event. 57 riders showed up giving it their best and putting on a great show for the huge crown of spectators.

I want to give a special thanks to Brian Itzaina with Hidden Valley Bikes/SDBMX.com and Chris Gilbert with Omega Bike Shop for helping gather up some great sponsors and getting tons of donated prizes to give away and for our winners. Also, I want to thank Rob Morgan with Alienation BMX for helping with the judging and donating tons of great product. Jeff Gibson also did a great job helping with the judging and shows up at the park on a weekly basis helping the young kids learn new tricks. The judges did a great job with their consistency and I didn’t hear any complaints on the results. The legendary Mike Parenti was our announcer and had the crown fired up the entire time. We had to be finished up by 10pm because of a local noise ordinance. I didn’t know if we could pull it off but miraculously we wrapped everything up exactly at 10pm.

Most of the donations for this event came from Hidden Valley Bikes, Omega Bike Shop, Alienation BMX and Vans. They were a huge part of this great event.

We also had great product donated from Fit, Premium, Haro, SDBMX.com, Primo, Lotek, S & M, Evangeline, Mirra Co, Animal, Federal, Colony and SDSF.

Lastly, thanks to Escondido Skate Park for providing a great place to ride and hosting this event.

I tested these fork in La Jolla....UTC to be exact. The unique design of these forks is that they feature a new steerer tube and leg joint for superior strength over conventional forks. It has butted and tapered "direct" legs flow smoothly into the 10mm thick hollow dropouts and prevent hanging up on grinds. Gotta dig that! Rake is built into the crown to give the same axle position and feel of Odyssey Classic forks. S2 version features an integrated fork race that eliminates the need for a separate bearing race. These are my favorite!

Gatorades; 'Because Grind' on Sunday July 12th OMEGA BIKE SHOP at 459 College Blvd. in Oceanside (San Diego County BMX)

On Sunday July 12th OMEGA BIKE SHOP at 459 College Blvd. in Oceanside, CA. 92057 (San Diego County BMX Shop www.omegabikeshop.com) put on the 'Because Grind' bmx demo.

GATORADE did a great deal of sponsoring as did Mirraco and of course OMEGA BIKE SHOP.

Tons of schwag was given out in Oceanside in the free raffle along with a Mirraco complete bike and a Mirraco Chocolate frame. Both the frame and complete couldn't have been givin to more deserving people in San Diego. Cant forget about the Gatorade chugging contest too!

Nigel and his crew showed up a bit late to the Oceanside BMX event but clearly made up for it by shredding the heck out of everything. Nigel threw down insane barspins all day in Oceanside. Mike Brennan, Manuel Cantero AKA E-MAN and Anthony Flores AKA BOY all came along for the ride.

Bike Empire In Poway Sucks Without The Owner there! A Negative San Diego BMX review! 3 out of 5 Stars!

Bike Empire Customer Service Sucks without the Owner (Tim Gill) in the store! They are located in Poway, CA.

By the way San Diego; this 'Store Review' is solely based on my personal customer service experience.

(UPDATE: SDBMX.com has already contacted Tim Gill, Bike Empires owner (by phone) & gave him an opportunity to explain what went wrong. Below is his response to the situation. By the way, after a nice chat on the phone, I thought Tim Gill, the owner was really cool. His staff on the other hand.......well....)

Driving past this store for the past year; I decided to stop, buy and inner tube for my BMX bike and at the same time, meet the guys at Empire Bikes for a free" review on SDBMX.com.

*Please note that SDBMX.com reviews tend to influence our San Diego BMX community and make our Bike Shops money! I like to keep business local but NOT in this case situation.

As I walked up, I noticed their awesome sign outside. I decided to take a picture of the sign outside (I now know to ALWAYS ask for 'permission' to take pictures before I start 'clicking' away ;p) to start off a new meeting.

Anyway, as I entered Poway BMX Bike Shop called Empire Bikes, this really old guy named "Matt" did NOT greet me; instead I warmly said, "Hi Guys, how are you all today?"

Matt, the old cashier dude, said instead, "Hold on, I'll be right with you." I was completely shocked at their rude customer service from a man that has never met me. I decided to

I asked if he was the owner; the rude old dude said, "no" and "man, you shouldn't take pictures without permission", grumpily. I sincerely apologized for doing so (again, I now have learned to ask permission first before I take pictures. Well......maybe not. LOL).

As I waited for Matt to ignore me some more, I decided to go towards the back of their store to meet the Head Bike Mechanic (by the way, he admitted being the 'Head Mechanic') for Empire Bikes in Poway, California. He looked really cool with his tattoos, so I decided to introduce myself. He seemed OK but Matt on the other hand....

Then across the store, I hear the old guy, Matt barking at me.... He said, "You're gonna have to leave and come back and talk to the owner" which is a Mr. Tim Gill.

Anyway, SDBMX.com does not recommend dealing with anyone except for Tim Gill, the owner!

Plus, I never got my inner tube! :(

Austin Monfort; BMX Ripper In Ramona, CA... (San Diego County BMX)

Driving in Ramona, CA on Main Street yesterday; I noticed the back of a 20" rim & cloud of dirt out of the corner of my eye.......

Pulling over quickly to check out the scene; I notice Austin Monfort (got the dudes last name from his beautiful birth mother, Carrie Umphres) launching off some 'home made' dirt jumps. Seeing the shovel next to the hill..........well, that's what BMX in the USA is all about. Working hard to make it happen by yourself!

Anyway, Austin Monfort (my new found BMX buddy from Ramona, CA) came out on his Black Eye Killarado 2010 model, like a bat from hell, outta nowhere and started seriously bookin' down his trail towards his dirt jump.......then booooo-yeah! Major air and when I say "major", I mean seriously San Diego BMXers; this guy hit's it hard and he's only 13!

Right after he showed his BMX talent, his father's girlfriend (I actually thought this very HOT woman from Ramona was Austin's sister) showed up to introduce herself.

FYI: I almost asked her out...ha,ha, ha.......until she said, "you have to meet Austin's father." Whoops....I just realized that I almost got my butt kicked. LMOA. LOL :)

Meeting Austin's father; I immediately noticed that the dude was a super cool bro & where he gets his competitive streak from. His dad is not only laid back but with all his "Cool Toys" (Dropped Black SUV on 22" & a Race Truck and other cool toys...), he's gotta be "racer" @ heart and a blast to hang out with also. I bet the guy has some stories to tell............plus, I also heard somewhere that his father still rides BMX bikes in Ramona. Yeah!!!!!

Nice family you have & thanks for your times, Austin!

Taking pictures of Hidden Valley Bicycle Store from the parking lot this afternoon, Sam Spreder (Co-Owner) walks out to greet me.

Wondering what the hell I'm doing taking pictures of his store ;0 ........now remember SDBMX.com readers; Sam and I Have Never Met In Person...........Sam greets me with a great big smile,warmly introduces himself and invites me in for a tour.

As I walk past a few racks of BMX bikes and reach the front door, I run into Brian "The Shop Rat" (coined by Sam). Sam noted Brian responsible for HVBS's website, sales, service and "other" things. I'm wondering what the "other" things are.... LMAO!!! The dude is super cool and knows his BMX.
Taking a look around, I also notice Jose behind the counter, their Sr. Bicycle Mechanic. Watching the guy in action was just like watching a renowned cosmetic surgeon place saline breast implants. This guy knows away around a bike! The female anatomy is another story. Just joking, Jose... :)

Then I'm introduced to Nathan King; Co-Owner of Hidden Valley Bicycle Store. The guy looks like member of the Henry Rollin's Band! :) Seeing his full tattooed sleeves, I cautiously approached him (lol) but after a minutes with the guy; I notice he's very down to earth approachable guy that loves what he does.

When we received these new Armada's from Subrosa, the whole San Diego office went crazy for this BMX frame! I gotta tell you that this Subrosa Armada Frame is one SIC piece of BMX art! it's almost.................sexy!

San Diego: The BMX Dew Tour kicks off in Grant Park Friday

The BMX Mountain Dew Tour started on Friday, June 26th, 2009 in Grant Park on in the big city of Chicago!!

It starts at 1:00 pm CST (11:00 am San Diego time) and Saturday at 11:00 am (9:00 am PDT).

You will find tons to do at the event like; the BMX Contest, athletes signing pictures. Watch all our favorite BMX riders that we've seen in San Diego flying over half-pipes, and jumping huge dirt ramps for entertainment.

Derik Silver a.k.a. Jumper. Do you know htis BMXer from San Diego?

This is Derik Silver. Also know to his piers/bitches/buddies/homies as "Jumper". I dig the name a lot! He's live in El Cajon and friggin' rips. He catch's the sickest and biggest air when he launches off a lump of dirt. And do NOT let me down play his talent which is going to get Jumper noticed and that's racing. Racing less thank 2 months, the guy has 22 f-in' trophys and sitting in 21st place out of 56 people in his racing league.

By the way ladies; if you think you're gonna have a change with this guy, unfortunately you're not. He's in a committed relationship with his awesome girlfriend that supports him 110%. Here at SDBMX.com, we like guys like that. Luck guy!

Somewhere in California during the early 70's, a bunch of kids on modified 20" Schwinn Stingray bicycles went out to a vacant lot and created a brand new sport of their very own.

Those kids were probably not even the first. The same scene of youthful energy and American resourcefulness was quite probably going on in Nebraska and/or New Jersey. But it was the California gathering of nameless pioneers who were recorded on film by Bruce Brown's cameras. The resulting motorcycle film, ON ANY SUNDAY, would spread the word like a wildfire.

There was no stopping it now. A new sport created by kids for kids was born. Bicycle Motocross was the name it was given. That name was quickly shortened to BMX. It grabbed the attention of thousands of kids in one short summer. Boys and girls on their modified bicycles were seen jamming through the dirt emulating their motorcycle motocross heroes.

Imitation lead to innovation and quickly the kids were performing tricks and "getting air" that made their motorcycle heroes green with envy. The next step was organized racing. By 1977, pockets of loosely organized BMX races dotted the nation from coast to coast. It was time for a national sanctioning body and from out of this need, the AMERICAN BICYCLE ASSOCIATION was created.

The AMERICAN BICYCLE ASSOCIATION not only filled that need, it completely changed and continues to shape the future of the sport it serves. The first step was to create a system of qualifying participants that was not only fair, but one which enhanced the competitive nature of the very sport itself and still afforded each and every rider the chance to be a winner. This need for fairness and allowing for the fortunes of luck led the way to the transfer system, in which the winner of each moto advances to the next round - be it quarter, semi or main event.

That first step led to a long and continuing list of firsts that spell out the very success of the ABA. From supplying the first and world's largest national sanctioning body, first national tour, first Pro purse, first Cruiser class competition, first sanction to call fouls as they occur, first starting light system, first automatic gate system, first voice command, first duel announcing, first computerized membership and points system, first computerized sign-ups, first computerized system for local tracks, first interactive website to service it's members, first and most prestigious National Amateur Championship to cover all ages and the list goes on…

ABA BMX racing is a sport of youthful achievement and the American family. While the young boy or girl BMX racer develops skills at an individual pace, they are learning about winning, losing and trying again. The racer's family learns that time spent together is support of the racer and the individual achievements is quality time.

It is the duty of the ABA to establish the rules of racing that provide fair competition and fun family entertainment for all of it's 60,000 plus members. This is a job to which the American Bicycle Association and all of it's employees are 100% dedicated.

So you want to race your BMX bicycle, eh?
You've come to the right place.

Racing BMX is easy to get started and the ABA has made it inexpensive to begin. The first two things you need are:

A bicycle
A track location
Although we can't help you much with getting a bicycle, we can tell you where BMX tracks are located all around the country. Visit our online TRACK DIRECTORY to find the location closest to you.

When calling your nearest ABA track, you'll probably want to ask five things:

How do I get to your track?
What time are your sign-ups and practice?
What time do you begin racing?
How much will it cost to begin racing?
How big are your first place trophies?
Once you know where to go racing and you have your 20-inch BMX bike, there is a simple checklist to go down in order to make sure your bike is ABA safe & race ready.:

Make sure all bolts are tight - especially your axle bolts and stem bolts.
All reflectors must be removed for safety purposes.
If your bike has a kickstand, it must be taken off.
Your bike needs the three required pads - a) covering the crossbar of your handlebars b) covering the handlebar stem (or gooseneck) and c) on the top tube of your frame.
You'll also need a number plate. Most ABA tracks will supply you with a plate when you sign up. If not, a simple pie plate will do just fine.
Next, there's the checklist of what you will need to wear in order to race. When you first start out racing BMX, think cheap. You don't need a fancy uniform - jeans and a long sleeve shirt will do.

Long sleeve shirt.
Long pants.
A helmet. Most ABA tracks have "loaner helmets for beginners to use. A lot of times, a good, inexpensive helmet can be found at garage sales or in the pit area of your local BMX track.
Any tennis shoe is sufficient.

Now you and your bike are race ready, let's go to the track!

When you arrive at the BMX track, naturally you'll want to check out the course.

There will be a dirt track (average length 1,000+ feet), with banked turns and jumps of all shapes and sizes. Actually, the first thing you need to do is find the sign-up / registration building. It is there that you'll need to fill out an ABA application and sign up to race. First-time racers are able to purchase a temporary membership for $25, which is good for 30 days. A "Temp" provides you with ABA's secondary insurance and enables you to go out on the track. Entry fees vary from track to track, ranging anywhere from 3 to 10 dollars.

Before you get up on the starting gate, it is suggested that first you closely watch the riders go around the track. Pay attention to their body motion over jumps (using arms and legs as shock absorbers) and note where riders are pedaling and when they are coasting. Take it slow on your first few laps. Remember, you are brand new to this and those fast, expert racers started off just like you. Take time to learn the track - know which obstacles are coming up and how to take it smoothly. Often, the difference in the beginner class is who is smoothest around the course rather than quickest.

Since BMX is a "short sprint" sport (with most races lasting 35 to 45 seconds), the start of a race is usually the most important. When you first begin racing, you'll most likely do what is called a one-footed start. Which is having one foot on your pedal and the other foot acting as a "kickstand," resting on the ground to keep you balanced. The majority of riders start with their right foot "forward" (on the pedals). Much like skateboarders or surfers, racers who line up in the gate with a left foot forward are called "goofy footed." Find out which feels most comfortable - there is no right or wrong way.

Soon, you will want to learn how to do the normal "two-footed start." Some riders can pick this up on their first day at the races and some beginners take weeks to learn how. You can practice the two-footed start anywhere - find a wall and ride up to it, with your front wheel touching. Apply a little bit of pressure on your forward pedal - just enough to keep your front wheel solid against the surface of the imaginary starting gate. Stand in an upright position, relax, and use both of your arms to balance the bike.

Once you've got the feel of balancing your bike on the gate, then you'll need to learn how to "snap" out of the gate. This is the motion of thrusting your hips into your handlebars and cranking down on your forward pedal as the gate is falling. The best way to learn this is watching the local pros and experts at your track, and constantly practice.

PRACTICE

Obviously, the more you race and ride your bike, the better you will get. That old saying "Practice makes perfect" stands true in the world of BMX racing. Very often, BMX racers will have a local jumping zone in the nearby dirt field that they use to practice in. And many of the ABA sanctioned BMX tracks hold a special "practice night."

CLINICS

Throughout the year, there are many top pros in the sport of BMX who travel around the country putting on beginner clinics. Attending a clinic is one of the best ways to learn how to get better in BMX.

Deerfield BMX Loop (Loop 2 of 5K Run/Walk Fitness Trail)

The site Deerfield BMX area is easily accessed by a 1.5 mile trail leaving from the Visitor Center parking lot with a right turn (south) off the concrete driveway onto the Visitor Center Loop trail. Hike .3 miles around and behind the parking lot at the intersection of Jackson Drive and Mission Gorge Road (or drive to the parking lot and begin there). Proceed north on the service road approximately 100 yards, looking on the left for the "Deerfield BMX Site" trail and "5K"signs. Turn back down this single track trail and follow its small creek (very active during rainy periods) for about .2 of a mile before crossing the creek bridge followed by a short climb up to an old asphalt road. Follow it straight ahead .25 miles on the road/trail. As you near the top of the climb, see the rock quarry as the trail turns to the east. While continuing up this segment, look ahead and view all of MTRP’s peaks- one of only a few places in the park where you can view all five at once! They are (from your right to left): Cowles Mountain - elevation 1591 feet, Pyle’s Peak - elevation 1379 feet, Kwaay Paay Mountain - elevation 1194 feet, South Fortuna Mountain - elevation 1094 feet, and North Fortuna Mountain - elevation 1296 feet -- all with trails to there summits.

Continue on up to an informational kiosk - the trails highest point - which overlooks the BMX site and shaded viewing/picnic area. From here, you can walk down through the competition area, however if the "BMXers" are practicing or competing, stay out of the site and watch from the shaded picnic tables and viewing area.

Leaving the site, continue down the old ashfault trail to its union with the trail up from the creek crossing.

The bonus to all park users is the scenic hike culminating in a .5 mile trail that loops around the Deerfield BMX site with great views of the quarry to the west and MTRP`s mountains to the east.

The Deerfield BMX Loop is part of the 5K (3.1 mile) Run/ Walk course connecting with the Visitor Center and Oak Grove Loops. Stop by the MTRP Visitor Center for a free "5K Trail" map with detailed description including GPS waypoint data.
